CALL FOR PROPOSALS

2016 Southwestern Division Conference

Humanities Applied: Expanding Connections

November 10 – 12

Fort Worth, Texas
Hosting Institution: Tarrant County College

Dear Colleagues:

Hope this letter finds you all well and I wish you a great and successful end of the school year.

I am writing to you to invite you to attend the Southwestern Division Community College Humanities Association conference, “Humanities Applied: Expanding Connections” that will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, from November 10 – 12, 2016 at Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Worth Downtown Sundance Square. This year’s conference is being sponsored by Tarrant County College. Please, plan in advance to attend this year conference and mark your calendar!

The Southwestern Division Conference is a great event that will energize us as educators/teachers in all areas of the Humanities, give us new ideas and insights, engage all participants in discussions, make new connections with colleagues in the same field of expertise or across the Humanities curriculum, and address critical, pressing, issues relevant to the status of the Humanities at the Community College. Accordingly, we would like to invite the Deans of the departments in the area of studies in the Humanities to help us develop constructive discussions or to share with us great successful projects in the Humanities recognized by the community.

Conference Theme and Proposals

The Humanities enable us to see the bigger picture, helping us to find relationship between varying ideas, cultural productions, times and places, and ways of knowing.  When applied to any human endeavor, the humanities enrich that undertaking by providing the necessary depth and breadth or the “why” behind the “what” or “how.”  When we don’t have the humanities as our foundation, we are often left disconnected and without purpose; we may have done the thing, but we don’t know why we did it and whether it was worth doing.  The Community College Humanities Association Southwestern Division invites participants from multiple disciplinary perspectives to examine connections that bring new life to a study, determine how the humanities can be applied to many aspects of life, and discover how the arts, philosophy, and religion contribute to our understanding and flourishing as individuals and societies in an increasingly complex, global world.

  • Cross-fertilization between two disciplines or among several disciplines
  • Seemingly diverse ideas that can be better understood in relationship to one another
  • How to make the humanities relevant to our highly connected world
  • Integrative ways of administering the humanities
  • Historical times and places where connectivity was key
  • Assessment tools that expand our application of the humanities
  • Inspired connections among diverse heritages, traditions, and histories
  • The arts and sciences as partners in engendering meaning
  • Visionaries, past and present, who made/make the connections that change the world
  • Cultural networks where the humanities matter
  • Connecting disparate disciplines to create further understanding
  • Innovative technologies that enhance humanity and bring us together, including distance education and online and hybrid courses
  • Ways to encourage the application of the humanities across the curriculum
