CALL FOR PROPOSALS

2016 Eastern Division Conference

Reimagining Humanities: Tradition, Today, Tomorrow

October 20 – 22

Providence, Rhode Island
Hosting Institution: The Community College of Rhode Island

The Community College Humanities Association’s Eastern Division invites you to submit proposals for our 2016 Eastern Division Conference in Providence, RI. Proposals should emphasize the significant and compelling practices of community college faculty and administrators.

As we move into the second decade of the twenty-first century, we need to be mindful of the sweeping changes we have lived through since the new millennium began. Swift advancements in technology, shifting approaches to education, and the advent of social media call for a serious reassessment of our disciplines as well as a redeployment of our resources and skills within the humanities. If we are to stay current, and, indeed, even relevant, in this rapidly evolving world then we need to initiate, maintain, and follow through to the end on the conversation concerning the humanities’ past, present, and future.

Possible Topics on Theme(s):

  • Redefining the humanities for the twenty-first century without disregarding their past
  • Bridging humanities and STEM-based content in education
  • Focusing in on the present and possible future social changes where education, poverty, gender, race, and sexual orientation are concerned
  • Inclusion of technology in the service of the humanities
  • Reevaluating community-based resources
  • Exploring the First-Year Experience
  • Revitalizing students as citizens, residents, and societal participants
  • Examining current best practices in online learning
  • Enhancing classroom learning through the use of digitized archival collections
  • Strengthening information literacy and critical thinking in the classroom
  • Integrating narrative and documentary films into humanities classrooms
